Happy Earth Day!
As a sustainability enthusiast who’s put Earth Day communications campaigns together for many organizations, I always enjoy watching others’ campaigns unfold.
Earth Day 2019 witnessed a social media news cycle brimming with climate optimism and forward-looking action from a collection of the world’s largest brands, some of whom announced major operational changes around this holiday:
- Disney has developed a solar farm large enough to power two of its theme parks.
- Juice giant Ocean Spray announced a goal of making their cranberry production 100 percent sustainable by 2020.
- The North Face, citing it’s “Explore More” campaign, closed its doors today, encouraging all employees to use their free hours reconnecting with nature. They also have a weeklong series of events and advocacy pushes that encourage the public to engage with their surroundings.
While they don’t cite major initiatives, other companies like the New York Times and Everlane, ThredUp, WeWork, Michelob Ultra and Busch have still made an effort to highlight Earth Day in other ways.
While this day provides a spotlight for sustainability news, anyone will tell you that corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an around-the-clock job. KWI, though small compared to these titans, also asks where we can make a positive impact. Our recent office relocation to downtown Atlanta led us to a LEED Platinum certified building, which allows us to better manage our environmental footprint as our team continues to grow. Our new space also places us close to MARTA, giving employees a convenient opportunity to take more cars off of traffic-laden Atlanta roads, especially since 100 percent of their public transportation costs are covered by KWI.
We’re excited to extend our CSR reach through our new Community Partnerships Program, which launches this spring. Our team will work with a 501(c)(3) organization in Atlanta to help them achieve their communications goals – all for free. This program will help us continue to build community around CSR within Atlanta and our agency.
Looking ahead, we will continue to monitor our footprint as we grow, working to keep our environmental impact low and our community impact high.
